Villers-Bretonneux ANZAC memorial
Built in 1938, the ANZAC memorial at Villers-Bretonneux is the memorial to all ANZAC soliders killed at the western front. At the site, the names of the 10,773 Australian Soldiers with no known graves are engraved. When we were at the site our tour historian explained to us the site and its history, including the Second Battle of Villers-Bretonneux.
The Second Battle of Villers-Bretonneux occurred during the last year of the war, 1918. It is notable as the first tank vs tank battle in history. The fighting on the allied side included Australian, British and French troops. The end resulted in an allied victory, and 25872 casualties combined for both sides, including over 2400 Australian casualties.
